Border Angus Club – cross the water to view cattle in Ireland!

On Sunday 3 July 2011, 12 members of the Border Angus club took a flight from Edinburgh to County Cork. After late night arrival drinks at the highly recommended Garryvoe Hotel, the group retired. Early Monday morning the mini bus and car set off to County Limerick and home of Jerry and Grace Henchy! We were greeted with delicious hot coffee, flap jacks an apple tart! Once we managed to lift ourselves back on the mini bus we travelled a short distance to view some spectacular cattle.

After viewing the Friarstown herd, Jerry kindly led the way to our second stop Luddenmore! Once again in what can only be described as true Irish hospitality, we were warmly greeted and invited to sit down a delicious meal washed down with red and white wine! A couple stones heavier we decided exercise was in order and remembered our prime objective of viewing black cattle!!!! We witnessed enthusiasm for the breed beyond belief along with some amazing genetics, some cracking cattle and we were blown away with Michaels breeding programme.

We arrived back at the Garryvoe just in time for…you guessed it…more food!!! We had a great evening which was enhanced by the presence of Michael Sheahan, John Tait and our Society President Albert De Cogan.

9am Tuesday morning, we set off for the Mogeely herd of Aberdeen Angus owned by Albert. The weather threatened rain but we were very lucky and managed to stay dry the whole trip. At Albert’s we saw the largest herd of Angus cattle on the trip and were thoroughly impressed by the extensive quality, size and uniformity of the herd. We also got a chance to view some of his show cattle and some recent purchases from bonnie Scotland!

Our second herd of the day was that of fellow council member John Tait of the Westellen herd. John had recently reduced his numbers down to around 20 Aberdeen Angus but has been winning a number of shows in his area with Westellen Black Belinda E594.

Our final visit of the trip was to Eustace Burke’s of the Clontead herd. We saw a fantastic group of Aberdeen Angus females and witnessed a fine tuned breeding programme based on some very special genetics. Once again we were welcomed into our hosts home for hospitality second to none!

We would like to say a huge thank you to all of our hosts…we hope someday soon we can show you similar hospitality and we wish you all the very best with your cattle…we were overwhelmed by what we saw….’GO RAIBH MILE MAITH AGAIBH!’

Hardiesmill visit – best of beef, butchery & blacks!

On Wednesday 8 June 2011, 24 Border Angus members descended on Hardiesmill, home of Robin, Alison, Charles & Richard Tuke and the renowned Tombuie Smokery and Hardiesmill herd and butchery!

It was a fantastic evening comprising of a short butchery demonstration, a taste of the 10 steak experience and then the chance to view a selection of the Hardiesmill Aberdeen Angus herd.

We discovered that Hardiesmill beef all comes from pedigree Aberdeen Angus cattle raised on grass and grass-silage. The beef is hung for 3-4 weeks before being seam cut by the in-house Master Butcher, Lee. The result, the largest range of steaks in Scotland.

The Border Angus club would like to say a big thank you to the Tuke’s and Lee for allowing us to sample the delights of Hardiesmill.
