Over 40 bulls viewed by Over 40 people!

The Border Angus Spring Bull Walk took place on Wednesday 25 January 2012. Over 40 people attend the eight stop tour to view over 40 Aberdeen Angus Bulls. There was a great display of bulls and I know that the breeders put in a huge amount of effort preparing their bulls for this event and sometimes it feels like a lot of hard work for a short space of time this walk attracted people from far and wide and I hope it has generated additional interest in their  bulls and the rewards are realised at the show and sale!

I would like to say a special thank you to Fraser & Christina Cormack…and Christina’s Aunty for providing much welcomed hot soup, pies and delicious cakes at Stickle Heaton. I would also like to thank Debbie Playfair-Hannay and all of those at Tofts for providing the refreshments that rounded off a great day!

A special thanks must also go to the stock men and women throughout the Borders who presented their cattle in top form……. I wish you the best of luck at Stirling!

Why not join our Youth Development Programme

Calling all young people located in the Scottish Borders and North Northumberland! The Aberdeen Angus Cattle Society is looking for young people to participate in their Youth Development Programme. This is a fantastic opportunity for you meet other young people with the same interests, learn new skills and if you wish to gain a specialised award in Animal Care then you can do that also!

We have already organised some workshops focused at teaching you the skills you will need to look after, show and sell pedigree cattle and are hoping to run even more workshops throughout the country. It is possible that if you are successful at the workshop and complete the award then you may have the opportunty to attend the Youth Development final….a weekend away learning new skills, developing more skills  and socialising with young people from all over the UK and the Republic of Ireland and the winner at the end of the weekend wins a study trip abroad.

Workshops have been arranged in the following places:

21st April: South East England @ Angus Stovold’s Rosemead Herd, Godalming, Surrey

28th April: South West England @ Ed & Claire Jones’ Rull Herd, Cullompton, Devon

29th April: Central England @ Jeremy Price’s Oakchurch Herd, Staunton-on-Wye, Herefordshire

There will be workshops in the Scottish Borders and Northern Ireland and we are looking at the possibility of perhaps holding workshops in Co Leitrim, Republic of Ireland and in the SW of Scotland.

THE WEEKEND EVENT: This year will be on the 29th & 30th September somewhere in Scotland!

Wedderlie Females top 3000 guineas

Mr Angus Hodge of H B and I Hodge and Sons, Hall Farm, Saxlingham, Norwich ought a two year old in-calf Aberdeen-Angus heifer with her six month old bull calf at 3000gns from John and Marion Tilson, Wedderlie, Gordon, Berwickshire. The heifer, Wedderlie Pricemore JB36, by Wedderlie Glenmore E922, also boasted high performance figures with a TSI of +33 and SRI of +41. Her bull calf is a son of Perkhill Eagle H017 purchased at Stirling in October, 2009, for 5500gns.

United Auctions auctioneer David Leggat said this annual sale of Aberdeen-Angus commercial females was going from strength-to-strength with a record entry. Buyers were clearly placing a premium on females with good performance figures based on grass-fed production.

Averages: Aberdeen-Angus. Fordel 28 cows and calves £2501.25; Wedderlie 11 cows and calves £2233.64, seven heifers and calves £2310; Newbank – three heifers £2450; Promise dispersal – 11 cows and calves £1780.23, seven heifers £1582.50, two bulls £2940; Moncur – one heifer £2100; Arnydie – three cows and calves £1697.50, three heifers £1067.50; Moffat – two cows and calves £1811.25.
