Buyers from Germany, Austria, Romania and Switzerland snapped up the leading lots at the first-ever sale of imported UK-bred Aberdeen-Angus at Wertingen, Bavaria.

British Aberdeen-Angus delegates attended the first ever sale of UK bred Angus heifers in Germany

All 94 yearling heifers from six UK herds were sold to average €2238 (£1880) with a top of €5900 (£4956) for one of 16 heifers bred by J and J Campbell, Wedderlie, Gordon, Berwickshire.

The heifer, Wedderlie Ebsolvere L366, an April, 2011-born daughter of the home-bred Wedderlie Nereside H581, is out of the HF Dreamstreet 21F daughter, Wedderlie Ebsolve. She had a terminal sire index of +31 and a self-replacing index of +46.

The buyer was local breeder, Franz Kosmar, who also paid the second top price of €4800 (£4032) for another year-old heifer, Wedderlie Blackseven L373, by Nightingale Paso J489 and out of Wedderlie Blacktwoseven F321 who is an Aynho Rossiter Eric B125 daughter. This one had a terminal sire index of +39 and a self replacing index of +52.

The third top price of €4200 (£3528) was also for one from the same herd, Wedderlie Ecaspa L306, by Lorabar Jasper Eric E170 and out of another Rossiter Eric daughter, Wedderlie Ecossaise E921. Buyer was AI station, Bayern Genetik.

The heifers were shipped to Germany in mid-March and came straight out of quarantine for the sale.

“This was a very encouraging start to what we hope will become an annual sale and gave breeders in Germany and adjoining countries a unique opportunity of sourcing directly from leading British herds,,” said Sheila Eggleston of Hexham-based pedigree cattle, semen and embryo company, Eggs-Port Ltd, who arranged the shipment on behalf of the German importers.

Aberdeen-Angus Cattle Society chief executive, Ron McHattie, was delighted with the interest in the sale. “Buyers travelled considerable distances to attend the sale and it augurs well for the future of the breed in mainland Europe,” said Mr McHattie. “There is tremendous interest in Aberdeen-Angus cattle on the Continent because of the breed’s easy keep advantages and a growing demand for quality beef in many Eastern European countries.”

Bavarian breeder, Bernhard Delle, who was instrumental in organising the sale and heads up a group of breeders promoting the Aberdeen-Angus breed in Germany, said demand had been stronger than expected. “We had a good ringside of buyers and the success of the sale demonstrates the huge potential for the Aberdeen-Angus breed in many parts of Europe,” said Mr Delle.

The Bavarian group is marketing hindquarter cuts of branded Aberdeen-Angus to leading butchers, hotels and restaurants with forequarters going to McDonalds for burger production.

Mrs Eggleston said she would shortly be looking for a large consignment of weaned Aberdeen-Angus heifer calves for shipment to Romania in the autumn.

Three heifers from Alan R Lawson and Son, South Farm, Hallington, Newcastle upon Tyne sold to €3000, nine from Playfair Farms, Morebattle Tofts, Kelso, Roxburghshire, to €2000, two from D Brenninkmeijer, Field Place, Compton, Guildford, Surrey, to €2100, six from P C Stovold and Son, Lydling Farm, Shackleford, Godalming, Surrey, to €2200, 10 from John Coultrip, Wingfield Farm, Stalisfield, Faversham, Kent, to €2300 and 48 from Dinar Estate Management Ltd, Fordel, Glenfarg, Perth, to €2700.

Daniel Whiteford acquires Nightingale Perry

Willie Robertson of the Nightingale herd is pleased to announce the private sale of Nightingale Perry L577 to the Borewell Angus herd for an undisclosed fee.

Commenting on the sale Mr Robertson said: “Perry is the top animal produced in 2011, if not all time at Nightingale. He has excellent body and limb structure with superior shape and muscle and has the best pedigree that has yet been produced from the herd”.

Nightingale Perry L577 sold privately to the Borewell herd

Perry is by the successful bull Nightingale Ploughman who was sold to Genus Breeding and has been used extensively throughout the breed in the UK. Perry contains the most influencial breeding Nightingale has to offer with the Nightingale Pride of Pershore line who bred Netherallan Peter Pershore and sire of sons of up to 25,000gns and Nightingale Poundman C183, who is approaching his 10th year at Nightingale and has more than 500+ services to his name.  Also at the forefront of Perry’s pedigree is Nightingale Precious Princess AO51, described by many as one of the top cows at Nightingale.

Performance wise Perry carries himself in the top 1% of the breed for 200, 400 and 600 day weights and has an EMA of +7.8 along with a terminal index of +51 and a self replacing index of +68.

Commenting on their purchase Daniel Whiteford of Borewell Angus added: “It was important for us to find a herd sire to complement the breeding of our past herd sire’s, but also add the performance that the modern market requires. With such tremendous conformation and muscling, we knew that Perry was the one for us. Backed up with generations of top performing cattle, it would be impossible to pass by on a bull that has generations of consistent breeders behind him.”

Rawburn Black Hawk – £40,000

A son of the 24,000gns sire Lockerley Legolas G850 has become the most expensive Aberdeen-Angus bull to the sold in the UK so far this year and is believed to be the dearest Aberdeen-Angus ever sold in the UK under 12 months of age.

The young bull, Rawburn Black Hawk L261, has sold to the Yorkshire-based Linton Gilbertines herd of Gordon Brooke for £40,000 in a private sale, with a half share of the bull’s semen rights retained by his breeders. His sire, Legolas, was purchased in Perth, February 2009, for 24,000gns by the Rawburn and Idvies herds.

Black Hawk comes from two of the best performing lines in the breed, being a son of Legolas, a bull in the top 1% of the breed for 400-day growth rate and the top 10% for 200 and 600-day growth rates, and out of Rawburn Blackbird G729, a granddaughter of the noted sire Rawburn Transformer, which is in the top 10% for 200, 400 and 600-day growth rates.

Commenting on his purchase Mr Brooke said he had been keen to secure Black Hawk for his fast establishing herd as he offered an exceptional combination of top genetics and performance and is from easy calving lines which should transmit well to his progeny.

“From the outset we’ve been determined to establish a high genetic merit herd and Black Hawk will complement our foundation female purchases well. He brings proven bloodlines, combined with excellent breed character and exceptional fleshing. He is, in short, everything you could want in a modern Aberdeen-Angus bull.”

Breeder John Elliot jnr said he had been reluctant to sell Black Hawk so young, but having seen the quality of females Mr Brooke had founded his herd on he was excited to see what the young bull could achieve.

“The combination of this stylish young bull and exceptional, proven maternal lines at Linton Gilbertines should produce some very exciting prospects for the future of the breed. Cogent Breeding is currently collecting semen and we hope to have semen available for the UK and worldwide markets in the near future,” he added.

Aberdeen-Angus Cattle Society Youth Development Programme prepares for fantastic workshops in Scotland and the Borders

The Aberdeen-Angus Cattle Society’s industry leading Youth Development Programme has now set dates for training workshops for Scotland, which will also be the host country for the 2012 National Final.

The programme, which is led by co-ordinator Gayle Bersey, is for young cattle enthusiasts from 8 to 24 years of age and is aimed at teaching the participants all the essential stock handling skills needed if they intend to work with cattle in the future.

Explaining the programme Gayle Bersey says: “YDP is not only a great educational process for the youngsters, but it’s a great social network for both farmers’ sons and daughters and also those youngsters who have an interest in farming, but don’t necessarily come from a farming family. Some of the participants don’t even have Aberdeen-Angus cattle. The programme teaches everything from basic handling skills, to clipping and presentation techniques for shows and sales, as well as husbandry and management skills.”

The summer workshops take advantage of the talent of some of the UK’s best stockmen and women who take time out to train the groups of participants ahead of the major final which takes place at the end of September. Trainers for the Scottish and Borders workshops will be a host of successful breeders and freelance cattle fitters including Fraser Cormack, William McLaren Jnr, John Lohoar, Jim Smith, Steve Wright, Dougie Shand and Wendy Willox.

The final itself, which is scheduled to take place in Scotland this year, centres on three key areas: cattle dressing, cattle showing and stock judging. The senior members also have to take part in an interview with key members of the Aberdeen-Angus Cattle Society.

Society chief executive Ron McHattie adds: “The Society’s YDP has gone from strength to strength and is now recognised in industry as a leading programme for cattle training. Workshops are carried out across the UK and Ireland with great attendance and the final is a fantastic show case for quality young handlers – the stock men and women of the future.”

Workshops in Ireland will include:

  • Perkhill, By Banchory, Aberdeenshire. By kind permission of Alex Davie. 2nd June 2012 10am
  • Netherton, Aucherarder, Perthshire. By kind permission of the McLaren Family. 11th August 2012 10am
  • Cornhill on Tweed, Northumberland. By kind permission of Fraser and Christina Cormack. 12th August 2012 10am

Anyone interested in taking part in the YDP workshops in any of the above areas should contact Gayle Bersey. Tel: 01738 622477 or go to www.aberdeen-angus.co.uk

Haymount Wavestar sells privately to Cheeklaw

Messrs J & W Arnott of Haymount, Kelso have waved goodbye to one of their 2012 Perth stars, Haymount Wavestar K986, sold in a high sum private deal with the Lucas family of Cheeklaw, Duns.

This March 2010 born bull is the first son from the 22,000 guineas stock bull Lorabar Blackstar G290. He is from the successful Witch family line at Haymount, which has produced bulls that have recently realised up to 16,000gns guineas at Perth. Wavestar has a Terminal Index of +30 and a Self Replacing Index of +39.

David Lucas of Cheeklaw said “This bull caught my eye as soon as I saw him…I knew straight away that he would complement the Cheeklaw herd. He has genuine breed characteristics, great locomotion and is naturally fleshed. Above all, he has a great temperament, something that is highly valued at Cheeklaw. With a bull this good I knew I would have to go to great lengths to ensure I got him!”

Tom Arnott reported “it is not our normal policy to sell bulls that have been entered into official society sales privately, especially when so close to the sale. However, we were delighted to have genuine interest from a very local pedigree breeder. Wavestar really is an exceptional bull and we wish the Lucas family of Cheeklaw every success with him!
